Title Modeling of Contact-Fatigue Failure of a Two-Layer Elastic Half-Space

Abstract The article presents a model of contact-fatigue failure of elastic and viscoelastic coatings under cyclic frictional loading. For the case of contact between an indenter and a body with a coating under periodic loading conditions, the dependence of the rate of accumulation of contact-fatigue damage in a two-layer half-space is studied depending on the degree of adhesion of the layers. The problem of determining the stress distribution in the coating and substrate upon contact with a periodic system of indenters under conditions of sliding friction is posed and solved. The kinetics of accumulation of contact fatigue damage in the coating and substrate due to cyclic loading by a periodic system of irregularities has been studied. The change in coating thickness due to fatigue wear is modeled, and the mechanism under consideration underlies three processes: separation of layers of finite thickness, wear of coatings, separation of the coating from the substrate. It is shown that the kinetics of wear significantly depends on the values of the parameters in the law of damage accumulation, as well as on the nature of the applied load – the cases of constant and variable distribution of the nominal pressure for the periodic system of indenters under consideration are studied. Analysis of the influence of surface wear, which has a mechanism different from fatigue, on the process of accumulation of contact-fatigue damage led to the conclusion that wear inhibits the process of damage accumulation in the coating, but at the same time accelerates this process near the interface.
