Abstract A physical simulation of the formation of wellbore wall breakouts was carried out on rock samples with holes drilled perpendicular to the bedding. The simulation demonstrated the appearance of pronounced oriented breakouts under uniform lateral stresses. Some hypotheses are proposed to explain the observed phenomena. According to the first hypothesis, it is assumed that the reason lies in the combined effect of anisotropy of strength and anisotropy of elasticity of a certain type, determined by a parameter different from the ratio of the elastic moduli along and normal to the layering. According to the second hypothesis, the reason may be the suppression of the growth of secondary breakouts after the initiation of the primary breakout. According to the third hypothesis, the reason can be associated solely with the strength anisotropy of a certain type. The results are useful in the design and development of hydrocarbon fields and underground gas storages and in the interpretation of well data to determine the stress state in the Earth's crust.
