Abstract In the process of projectiles impacting limb, skin will retard the projectile and affect the energy release process. To clarify the retarding mechanism of skin on projectile, a three-layer structural model of simulated skin was established and verified through the experiment of spherical fragment penetrating skin by one-stage light gas gun facility. Furthermore, we established a bionic composite simulation model including skin and gelatin used to reveal further the retarding mechanism of skin. And based on the numerical calculation model of projectiles impacting on the bionic targets, the retarding effect of skin on projectile was analyzed from the aspects of velocity attenuation, flip angle and maximum temporary cavity diameter. The simulated results show that the retarding effect will accelerate projectiles velocity attenuation, cause the premature instability of rifle cartridges and reduce the maximum temporary cavity diameter. Such finding slays a foundation for the future study of the harm of the projectile to the real human body rather than using a single gelatin.
