Abstract Several different topology models are obtained by topology optimization with rectangle as basic configuration. According to these optimization models, three different structures are developed and the best energy-absorbing structure, namely the connected four curved beams honeycomb (CFCBH), is selected. Compared with other common honeycomb structures, the topology optimized structure has better energy absorption characteristics. We further study the mechanical properties of CFCBH, including its platform stress, densification strain and deformation. Finally, a gradient optimization algorithm is proposed, which directly link the optimization objective and design variables through function expression, and the optimization efficiency is greatly improved. After introducing the optimized gradient, the energy absorption capacity of the structure has been improved. The proposed functional gradient optimization algorithm is expected to be widely used.
