Abstract |
An outstanding scientist in the field of mechanics Academician
Vladimir Vasil'evich Bolotin has celebrated his 80th birthday.
He has made a substantial contribution to the development of a
number of branches in theoretical and applied mechanics, vibration
and stability theory, applied elasticity, structural mechanics,
reliability and safety theory for machines and structures, fracture
mechanics, and mechanics of composite materials. He is an author of
400 printed publications, including 15 monographs.
He has obtained fundamental results in the stability theory for
elastic systems under dynamic loads, aeroelasticity, and asymptotic
methods for solving problems in the theory of vibrations. His
monographs "Dynamic Stability of Elastic Systems" (1956), and
"Non-conservative Problems in Elastic Stability" (1961) have become
classic studies in this field.
He has greatly influenced the development of
probabilistic-statistical methods in mechanics, the creation of the
general theory of reliability of structures based on the methods of
random processes and fields, and the development of the theory of
seismic resistance of structures. His investigations in these fields
have been summarized in his books "Statistical Methods in
Structural Mechanics" (1961, 1965), "Probability and Reliability
Methods for Structural Design" (1971, 1982), and "Random Vibrations
in Elastic Systems" (1979).
V. V. Bolotin is widely known for his studies in mechanics of
composite materials. He has developed models of laminated and
fiber-reinforced materials, methods for determining effective
elastic constants, methods for predicting residual stresses in
structures from composite materials, and stochastic models of
cumulative damage and fracture of composite materials. He has
proposed methods for predicting the service life of engineering
structures at the design stage and methods for estimating the
residual service life during the operation. His studies in this
field have been reflected in the monographs "Mechanics of
Multilayered Structures" (co-authored by Yu. N. Novichkov, 1980) and
"Service Life of Machines and Structures" (1984, 1990).
In recent years, V. V. Bolotin has been actively working in the
field of fracture mechanics and mesomechanics. He has proposed a
general approach to the modeling of the mechanical behavior of
loaded bodies while their configurations change (including the case
of propagation of cracks in these bodies). He has developed a theory
of growth of cracks that covers all stages of the fatigue fracture.
This theory is based on the combination of mechanics of cracks and
mechanics of cumulative dispersed damage. He has applied this theory
to the crack growth in the conditions aggravated by hereditary
phenomena, corrosion, etc. The results of these investigations have
been presented in the monographs "Stability Problems in Fracture
Mechanics" (1966) and "Fatigue Mechanics" (1999).
In addition to his theoretical studies he has worked much for
applications. Since 1960 to 1980 he took part in applied
investigations for aerospace engineering, ship building, and nuclear
power engineering. Since 1980 to 1985, he headed the development of
the new-generation State Standards on reliability of engineering
structures. He has issued the Head Standard for this series of
standards, as well as a number of handbooks and methodological
materials.
V.V. Bolotin has been widely recognized for his studies in Russia
and abroad. His monographs have been translated into many languages
and a large number of his articles have been published by foreign
publishers. He has participated in a large number of international
congresses and symposia. He has permanently been invited to deliver
lectures at leading international universities and scientific
centers.
He gives much effort and energy to the dissemination of modern
achievements in mechanics, publishing handbooks and textbooks,
methodological supplements and literature on engineering standards,
and perfection in the training of engineers and scientists. More
than 1200 research engineers in the field of mechanics have been
trained at the Chair of Dynamics and Strength of Machines headed by
Bolotin at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. More than 150
Ph.D. dissertations and 20 D.Sc.(Doctor of Science) dissertations
have been prepared under his supervision and consultation.
He is well known for his science related social and organizational
activity in the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian National
Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Inter-sectoral
Scientific and Technological Complex "Reliability of Machines",
Higher Attestation Committee, editorial boards of Russian and
international scientific journals, and numerous scientific
conferences and symposia.
He has been awarded the State Prizes of the USSR (1985) and Russia
(2000) in the Field of Science and Technology, Russian Government
Prize (1996), Honored Prize of the European Safety and Reliability
Association (2001), and Alexander von Humboldt Prize (2001). He is a
Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian
Engineering Academy, and the Russian Academy of Architecture and
Construction Sciences. He is an Honored Doctor of the Budapest
Technical University and a Foreign Member of the US National Academy
of Engineering. He has been awarded the Golden Medal "For the
Service to Science and Mankind" from the Czechoslovakia Academy of
Sciences and the Alfred Freudenthal Medal from the American Society
of Civil Engineers. He has been awarded the Orders of Lenin, Red
Banner of Labor, October Revolution, and Friendship.
The editors and the Editorial Board of the journal are
congratulating Vladimir Vasil'evich Bolotin on his jubilee and
wishing him long life, strong health, and further achievements in
his creative work. |
