Abstract The spatial problem of the stability of relative equilibria is solved for an orbital linkage the center of mass of which moves in a circular orbit. The particles that constitute the linkage are connected by a massless inextensible flexible tether. Apart from the force of attraction to the fixed gravitation center, these particles undergo elastic impacts at the instants when the tether becomes stretched. (These impacts prevent the particles from moving away from the common center of mass without limit along Keplerian orbits.) The vertical (in the orbital coordinate frame) equilibrium positions, which exist in the problem under consideration at the stretched tether, are considered. The reflection method for the description of the dynamics of mechanical systems with a unilateral constraint is applied for the stability analysis.
