Title Self-organizing motion of a one-dimensional chain in air flow
Author(s) V. A. Pilipenko (Moscow)
Abstract We present an experimental study of the steady motion of a closed metal chain through an ejector nozzle. The carrier air flow acts on the mechanical system with unilateral constraints as a source of nonequilibrium. A process of self-organization develops with observable hardening of the chain- an effect of self-induced coherence and gyroscopic rigidity. Perturbations of the energy flow (due to, for example, an inhomogeneity of the chain or random swirl of the air flow) leads to the formation of group solitons on a stable coherent structure. The existence of this steady motion is due to its closeness to the unperturbed motion.
