Landslides caused by turbulent flow of a liquid layer produced by rain on hillsides |

Abstract |
Landslide is a sliding
motion of soil mass on a hillside caused by
imbalance of forces. Part of the liquid carried by raindrops
penetrates the porous soil and fills up its smallest interstices, thereby
loosening the soil (weakening the forces of adhesion). As a result, a
water-saturated medium is formed whose mechanical properties (viscous and
plastic characteristics) differ from those of the soil prior to the rain.
In this highly wetted ground, a thin layer is formed on the hillside under
the action of the gravity force, and the particles of this layer start
flowing downhill. It can be assumed that in this suspension current the
soil and the fluid particles in the pores move with the same speed. |
