Abstract In recent years, the properties of soft soil subjected to a blast load have been considered in numerous theoretical and experimental investigations [1-7]. There are several experimental methods for finding shock adiabats for soft soil [2-4, 7]. However, the results are quite contradictory and further investigation is needed regarding the basic properties of soft soil, as well as a thorough theoretical justification of the experimental methods. This work describes the numerical results pertaining to the action of a surface explosive charge transmitted to sand through a metal plate. The soil is modeled by an incompressible material of S. S. Grigoryan's type [8] with irreversible volume and shear deformations. The numerical solutions obtained on the basis of various shock adiabats used in the scientific literature are compared with experimental data. This investigation results in the construction of combined adiabatic relations for the sand subjected to shock, together with their justification for pressures not exceeding 1 GPa. We also examine the influence of volume plastic strains and friction forces on wave processes in soil.
