Abstract The reflection and transmission of SH waves through functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic nanoplates sandwiched in two elastic half-spaces are investigated. The modified couple stress theory is combined with the extended Legendre orthogonal polynomial method to perform the derivation process. At the same time, the corresponding multilayered approximate model is solved by the global matrix method. The results of the two methods are compared to confirm the correctness. The influences of size-dependent effects, inhomogeneity and magnetoelectric effect on reflection and transmission are discussed. The results show that the Legendre orthogonal polynomial method can solve the reflection and transmission of non-homogeneous nanoplates without delamination. The couple stress effect, inhomogeneity and magnetoelectric effect change the resonant frequency and critical angle. The couple stress effect and magnetoelectric effect on reflection and transmission behavior are mutually inhibited.
