Abstract The theoretical aspects of the application of Pochhammer-Chree acoustic waves in nondestructive diagnostics are analyzed. The main focus is on longitudinal axially symmetric harmonic modes. The analysis of dispersion curves for rods made of auxetic materials (materials with negative Poisson's ratio) is given for the first time. Dispersion curves are obtained in the vicinity of the second limiting velocity, revealing the sensitivity of the values of the second limiting velocity to the variation of Poisson's ratio.
Keywords Pochhammer-Chree waves, polarization, dispersion, Poisson’s ratio, limiting velocity
