Title On the occasion of D. M. Klimov seventy-fifth birthday
Author(s)
Abstract July 13, 2008, is the seventy-fifth birthday of Dmitrii Mikhailovich Klimov. His life has been full of intensive engineering, scientific, and scientific-organizational activities. He began his career as an engineer at the Research Institute for Precision Instruments; now he is Academician of the Academy of Sciences, a scientist of great scientific authority, who has obtained fundamental scientific results. In his young years, after he had graduated from Moscow State University and finished his post-graduate studies, Dmitrii Mikhailovich worked at the Scientific-Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, which now bears the name of the outstanding scientist-engineer, Academician Viktor Ivanovich Kuznetsov. At that time, Dmitrii Mikhailovich designed gyroscope devices that ensure the control of space rockets at their boost paths. Deep understanding of mechanics and ability for detailed and rigorous theoretical analysis of fundamental mechanical laws allow Dmitrii Mikhailovich to understand many mysterious phenomena. He has succeeded in finding solutions of very complicated problems that constantly occurred when designing absolutely new gyroscopic devices with accuracy characteristics that were unique at the time.

His Ph.D. thesis defended in 1960 and D.Sc. thesis defended in 1965 deal with problems of precision gyroscopic instruments. The method for prelaunch remote control of a gyroplatform, proposed by Dmitrii Mikhailovich together with his colleague, engineer Vladimir Antonovich Potapenko, is still used in practice. The results of the studies performed at the time were published in more than fifty scientific papers. It was discovered that strong damping negatively affects devices operating under strong vibration conditions. The special characteristics of resonance phenomena in substantially nonlinear gyroscopic systems were analyzed. Several appendices were written to E. L. Nikolai's book "The Gyroscope in Gimbal Suspension" edited by Dmitrii Mikhailovich and published in 1964. In these appendices, the depth of E. L. Nikolai's studies was emphasized. Somewhat later, in 1978, Dmitrii Mikhailovich, in collaboration with Sergei Anatol'evich Kharlamov, wrote the monograph "Dynamics of a Gyroscope with a Gimbal Suspension."

Since 1967, soon after the Institute for Problems in Mechanics had been established, Dmitrii Mikhailovich began working at this Institute, first as Head of Department of Solids and Gyro Mechanics. He performed deep investigations in the field of general theory of inertial navigation systems. In 1975, Dmitrii Mikhailovich becomes Vice-Director of the Institute. In 1976, for the series of works in mechanics, Dmitrii Mikhailovich was awarded the USSR State Prize. In 1981, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and in 1992, Full Member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1984, his monograph "Inertial Navigation on Sea" was published. The main idea of this book is presented very clearly, a historical survey is given, and the most important specific problems of the ship navigation systems realization are considered. In this book, the principle of insusceptibility of gyro-pendulum systems to perturbations is significantly generalized. In 1985, Dmitrii Mikhailovich in collaboration with Viktor Filippovich Zhuravlev published the book "Hemispherical Resonator Gyro," which has laid the scientific foundation of the development of an absolutely new type of gyro sensors.

In 1989, Dmitrii Mikhailovich was appointed Director of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. As Director of the Institute, Dmitrii Mikhailovich completely realized his talents to organize profound scientific research. Although the scope of research carried out at the Institute was very broad, Dmitrii Mikhailovich managed to pay attention to each of the studies, help and support them, and distinguish the most promising directions of research.

Dmitrii Mikhailovich helped to complete and implement the work of one of the Laboratories of the Institute concerning the use of geo ripping in oil industry, which was interrupted by death of the author of this idea, Academician S. A. Khristianovich. The wide scope of scientific interests and high scientific activity always result in fruitful studies. Thus, a series of monographs, fundamental in their respective fields, appeared, including "Computer Algebra Methods in Problems of Mechanics," 1989, in collaboration with V. M. Rudenko, "Investigation of Viscoplastic Flows in Channels and Cavities with Variable Wall Shapes (Elements of Theory and Technical Applications)," 1995, in collaboration with A. V. Gnoevoi and V. M. Chesnokov, "Mechanics of Large-Scale Space Structures," 1997, in collaboration with N. V. Banichuk, A. P. Markeev, et al., and "Group-Theoretic Methods in Mechanics and Applied Mathematics," 2002, in collaboration with V. Ph. Zhuravlev (in English). In 1994, Dmitrii Mikhailovich was awarded the State Price of the Russian Federation for his work in the field of application of computer methods in problems of mechanics. Being Director of the Institute, Dmitrii Mikhailovich has raised the authority of the Institute as the leading institution in the field of mechanics.

In the Academy, Dmitrii Mikhailovich, as a scientist of high scientific authority, as an organizer capable to solve problems important for progress in science with high responsibility, was elected Member of the Bureau and, at the next election in 1996, Academician-Secretary of the Branch of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since then, Dmitrii Mikhailovich is Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2002, Dmitrii Mikhailovich was elected Academician Vice-Secretary of the Branch of Energetics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2004, Dmitrii Mikhailovich left the position of Director of the Institute, still continuing intensive scientific activity. In 2003, Dmitrii Mikhailovich served as Chief Editor of the collection of papers dedicated to his teacher, Academician Aleksandr Yul'evich Ishlinskii, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In 2004 and 2005, the following monographs were published: D. M. Klimov, A. V. Gnoevoi, and V. M. Chesnokov "Foundations of the Theory of Flows of Bingham Media" (2004) and D. M. Klimov, A. G. Petrov, and D. V. Georgievskii "Viscoplastic Flows. Dynamical Chaos, Stability, and Intermixing" (2005). In addition, in 2004-2007, he publishes 15 scientific papers. The most recent paper, written in collaboration with V. Ph. Zhuravlev, is published in the present issue of the journal and contains an excellent solution of the ancient problem about celts.
