Abstract The integration of the equations, which are obtained by letting the components of linear strains be equal to zero, gives explicit expressions for rigid body displacements of elements of noncircular cylindrical shells. These expressions are used for constructing the shape functions of an effective tetragonal finite element. On the basis of this element, an algorithm is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear deformation and buckling of shells. The buckling of a cylindrical shell with an elliptic contour of the cross-section is analyzed. The influence of the elliptic shape and nonlinearity of deformation of the shell in the pre-critical stage is studied.
