Abstract An absolute majority of experimental data on the long-term strength of metals under complex stress state, which have been accumulated during the last 50 years, are related to tests at constant load. Numerous researchers have accumulated extensive factual information, which allows one to propose a technique for quantitative processing of this information and select most adequate criteria from among a large number of candidates. In view of a large scatter of test results, generalized long-term strength characteristics can be practically formulated only in terms of simple scalar criteria. In the present paper, all published experimental data known to the authors are analyzed. Statistical assessments of applicability are obtained for various familiar criteria on the basis of the most reliable functional relations
