Abstract An elastic collision of three rigid bodies moving translationally along a fixed straight line is considered. It is assumed that before the collision, two of the bodies have contact but do not move, while the third body moves freely. We investigate the characteristics of the impact depending on the parameters of the system-mass ratios and contact rigidity ratios. This system is shown to have resonance properties that predetermine the result of the impact. These properties are more pronounced in the case where the mass of the central body is relatively small. In this case, the impact can be formed by a large number of alternating collisions of the central body with the lateral ones.
