Title Torsion of rods with elastic properties depending on the stress state type
Author(s) E. V. Lomakin (Moscow)
Abstract Torsion problems for rods made of materials whose properties change depending on the nature of loading or deformation are stated. In these materials, processes of volume and shear deformation are coupled, with the coupling parameters depending on the loading nature. Such effects manifest themselves in rocks, some sorts of structural graphite, carbon-based composite materials, concrete, refractory ceramics, as well as many other materials. It is shown that the classical approach based on Saint-Venant's hypotheses as regards the cross-section rotation and warping cannot be applied to the materials in question, since in these materials, the displacements due to torsion are coupled with those due to deformation of the cross-section. Depending on the torsion conditions, an axial compression force or a bending moment can appear. Some of these effects are analyzed on the basis of the approximate solution of the torsion problem for a rod with rectangular cross-section.
