| Abstract |
Adhesive interaction caused by van der Waals forces is ubiquitous since it occurs even
between neutral molecules or atoms. It plays a prominent role in the interactions between nano- or micro-sized bodies. Experimental and analytical studies in such cases are limited only to idealized
ones and face many invincible difficulties. Using computational studies incorporating the interaction
between two elastic bodies, a better understanding can be obtained in various fields including material
science and biophysics. In this work, we present a novel method to develop a computational model for
the interaction between two elastic bodies using the Lumped Parameter Model, which was proven to
be computationally more efficient. For validation purposes, numerical studies are carried out with idealized cases and the results obtained are compared with the analytical results. Particle capture studies
and methods to overcome the attachment force are also conducted in this study to illustrate the applicability of the formulation. |
