Abstract This paper provides a brief overview of the main approaches to constructing constitutive relations for biomaterials within the framework of hyperelasticity. The basic approach involves defining the form of a hyperelastic model and then tuning its parameters by fitting it to experimental stress-strain curves. However, many models exist without clear guidelines for their selection. Furthermore, the nonlinearity of the models leads to nonuniqueness of optimal parameter sets. Recently, new approaches that do not require a predefined potential form have been actively developed, some of which offer automatic selection of hyperelastic models using sparse or symbolic regression.
