Abstract Usually, fluctuations in the foundations are quite large and influence the response of the structures resting on the foundation. The Gaussian random field is used to describe the uncertainty of the elastic foundation while isogeometric analysis as well as the theory of shear deformation are used to construct the equations governing the behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. The isogeometric analysis for the FGM plates in the uncertain elastic foundation is proposed by applying a perturbation approach based on standard isogeometric analysis. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) which consists of a spectral representation method is used to evaluate the validation of the results in the paper. From the collected numerical data represented in the numerical examples, it is suggested a reliable accuracy when comparing the results from the MCS and the present approach. The effects of an uncertain elastic foundation on variability in the bending response are drawn on FGM plates via numerical examples.
