Abstract In the present work, closed form analytical solutions are obtained for the thermoelastic displacement and stress fields due to a steady point source of heat in an isotropic elastic half-space. With the help of thermoelastic displacement potential functions, the displacement and stress fields are determined in the context of steady-state linear uncoupled thermoelasticity. Using axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates, analytical expressions for the displacement and stress components are derived for two types of boundary conditions: (i) displacement free boundary; and (ii) stress free boundary. Further, variation of thermoelastic surface displacement and stress components with depth are also represented graphically for different values of Poisson’s ratio. It is noticed that Poisson’s ratio has a significant influence on the displacement and stress fields due to a steady point source of heat in an elastic half-space.
Keywords Uncoupled linear thermoelasticity, steady point heat source, potential functions, displacement and stress fields, isotropic half-space
