Abstract A method for identifying the length scale parameter of the strain gradient elasticity is proposed based on known experimental data on the effect of surface corrosion defect sizes on the parameters of fatigue resistance of steels and aluminum alloys. The possibility of a natural description of the decrease in the stress concentration factor near small-sized corrosion defects, which are modeled in this study as semi-ellipsoidal surface pits, is shown. The identified values of the length scale parameters are in the range of 20–230 μm.
