Abstract The article considers the motion of an inertial object with jet thrust in the absence of external forces while moving in a vertical plane. The problem is to transfer the object in a finite time to a chosen rectilinear horizontal trajectory with maximizing the terminal velocity, avoiding overshooting a given height. For the sufficiently large control times, the problem was solved by using the modified linear tangent law of the thrust direction control. Additionally, an asymptotic analysis was carried out. In particular, analytical results are obtained in the case of high thrust.
Keywords optimal control, trajectory optimization, linear tangent law, phase constraint, constant thrust
