Abstract We present the results of quasistatic extension tests for a cotton thread until break. The obtained nonlinear dependence of the tensile force on the thread strain in elongation are used to construct the laws of nonlinear deformation of cotton threads treated as composite materials.

To determine the parameters of the developed nonlinear deformation laws for various threads, the experimental results are generalized to derive mathematical relations that agree well with the experimental data.

The proposed nonlinear laws are parametrically analyzed to show that they are equivalent to the experimental results and correspond to the deformation processes for various thread extension modes.
