Abstract There are known methods for determining the mechanical characteristics of films and membranes with plane initial geometry. But the films and membranes can have nonplanar initial shape (shell compositions of material-structure type) and complex structure. It is impossible to determine mechanical characteristics of such objects by the standard uniaxial tension method. There are few papers dealing with mechanical characteristics of shell material-structures with defects.

We indicate two approaches to estimating the strength of shell films and membranes of complex structure. An efficient experimental-theoretical approach to studying integral (reduced) mechanical characteristics of shell films and membranes of spherical shape and complex structure is presented. Several examples of determining mechanical characteristics for linearly and nonlinearly elastic as well as plastic spherical shells, including shells of complex structure, are considered.
Keywords film, membrane, shell composition, complex structure, defect, elastic and plastic materials, mechanical characteristic
