Title On the Occasion of D. D. Ivlev Eightieth Birthday
Author(s)
Abstract Dyuis Danilovich Ivlev was born on September 6, 1930, in the city of Cheboksary. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1953 and defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in 1956 and Doctor of Sciences dissertation in 1959 at this faculty.

Professor Ivlev's scientific interests lie in the field of mechanics of solids, mainly in the theory of limit state and ideal plasticity.

Professor Ivlev studied the limit statically determinate states of solids in full plasticity and showed that the general equations of static and kinematics are of hyperbolic type, which agrees with the shear mechanism of deformation associated with the formation of sliding surfaces.

The results were generalized to anisotropic and compressible media and to fracture by separation.

Professor Ivlev and his colleagues studied the statically determinate case of the general plane problem, generalizing the results of the classical plane problem to the case of longitudinal shear forces. They obtained important results in the field of spatial problems in the limit state theory, developed methods for determining the limit state in the case of indenting rigid punches of arbitrary cross-sectional shape into an ideally plastic half-space, and obtained solutions to problems on the indentation of rigid pyramids into an ideally plastic medium, spatial flow of an ideally plastic layer compressed by rough rigid plates, etc.

The possibility of constructing the original relations of the theory of limit state and ideal plasticity was shown by constructing an appropriate dissipative function. The postulates underlying the construction of the theory of plasticity and leading to associated flow and loading rules were systemized.

A series of papers were devoted to linearized problems of elastoplastic and rigid-plastic states of bodies, and an algorithm was developed that allowed obtaining approximate analytic solutions to complicated elastoplastic problems with unknown interface between the elastic and plastic regions.

Professor Ivlev has published more than 250 scientific papers including nine monographs. His results have made a fundamental contribution to solid mechanics. The formation and development of scientific schools of mechanics in Voronezh, Cheboksary, and other Russian cities is closely related to his name. Many of Professor Ivlev's pupils become Doctors and Candidates of Sciences.

The editorial board and editorial staff of the journal "Mekhanika Tverdogo Tela" (Mechanics of Solids) heartily congratulate Dyuis Danilovich Ivlev with his eightieth birthday and are wishing him strong health and many new creative achievements.
