Title Estimation of Equivalent Stresses in the Analysis of Long-Term Strength of Metals under Combined Stress State
Author(s) A.M. Lokoshchenko (Institute of Mechanics, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Michurinskii pr-t 1, Moscow, 119192 Russia, loko@imec.msu.ru)
Abstract Results of systematic studies of long-term strength of metals under combined stress state obtained using the criterion approach are presented. Four basic combinations of principal stresses are examined as equivalent stresses σe. Three measures of total spread of experimental and theoretical values of the creep failure time are suggested. Specific features of the inhomogeneous stress state in thick-walled tubular test samples under the action of internal pressure are studied. It is shown that the considered methods for approximating the change of the inhomogeneous stress state arising in such samples by a homogeneous state results in an equivalent stress of the same form. The statistical treatment of all known experimental data allowed us to determine the equivalent stresses that must be used in long-term strength computations for different types of stress states. It is shown that the elimination of test results that have random character from the total set of experimental data does not affect the final conclusions about the choice of σe. In the analysis of the experimental data the complicated relations for σe involving an additional constant, the value of this constant is practically independent of the choice of the measure of total description of experimental and theoretical creep failure life. It is shown that these complicated expressions have insignificant advantages over the above four basic expressions for σe.
