Abstract We consider a fracture process model based on the concept of an interaction layer [1]. We present systems of equations which permit determining the layer thickness δ0 from direct measurements of the critical force and displacements in experiments on DCB specimens with plastic properties of the interaction layer taken into account. In the absence of direct experimental data for DCB specimens, we estimate δ0 in terms of the fracture viscosity KIC [2] and known material characteristics.
