Abstract We show the efficiency of the structural fracture criterion in nonstandard problems such as estimating the strength of materials with small defects. We compare the obtained theoretical results with experimental data for defects of small size. The proposed approach permits constructing two-criteria fracture diagrams and estimating, from a unified standpoint, the strength of materials with stress concentrators of various types.
