Title The 70th birthday of Professor V. M. Alexandrov
Author(s)
Abstract Professor Victor Mikhailovich Alexandrov, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Mechanics of Solids", Leading Researcher of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Sciences (Physics & Mathematics), Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (physics section), has celebrated his 70th birthday. He is well known among scientists in the field of mechanics, both in Russia and abroad.

He is a brilliant representative of the Rostov-on-Don school of scientists in mechanics; he has studied from Academician I. I. Vorovich.

Main areas of his scientific activity cover mechanics of contact interaction and fracture of solids; contact problems of tribology; stress concentration near thin defects; problems of continuum mechanics with mixed boundary conditions; and integral, integro-differential, and functional equations of mathematical physics.

He is one of the founders of the new direction in the science of mechanics - nonclassical problems of solid mechanics with mixed boundary conditions. He has developed a number of effective numerical-analytical methods for solving such problems.

Together with his students, he has investigated a number of topical issues: contact problems for elastic bodies with complex geometry; contact problems for linearly deformable solids with complex physical and mechanical properties; contact problems of tribology and hermetology; strength of elastic bodies with thin-walled stress concentrators; and problems of plates and shells that are subject to mixed support conditions, have flaws, or interact with a linearly deformable solid or fluid.

He is an author of more than 350 publications, among which there are 9 monographs.

He gives much attention to bringing up young scientists. He delivers a number of original lecture courses in the Moscow Lomonosov State University. Thirty Ph.D. dissertations have been carried out under his supervision. Seven of his students have subsequently defended their Doctor-of-Science dissertations.

He manages much of organizing work in science. He is a member of a number of scientific and dissertation councils, takes part in the organization of scientific congresses and conferences.

He is a member of the Russian National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and National Committee on Tribology.

For his achievements in science he has been decorated with the Order of Honor.

His colleagues and students, together with the Editorial Board and editors of the journal, are wishing him strong health and further advances in science.
