Title Magnetic suspension in an alternating current field

Abstract It is known that rapidly alternating forces acting on a mechanical or electromechanical system can substantially affect its dynamic properties, e.g., produce new equilibria, alter the properties of existing equilibria, cause self-induced vibrations, etc. We show how the action of rapidly oscillating electromagnetic forces can be used to devise a new passive magnetic suspension of inductor type. In the simplest case, the suspension is a system of two rings with a common vertical axis, one of the rings being fixed and the other being free. The rings are powered with alternating current, which gives rise to stable equilibria in the gravitational field. Under certain conditions, such a suspension can serve as an alternative to a superconducting suspension in a constant magnetic field, for which the stability of the equilibrium is known as the "magnetic potential well" effect [1].
