Title Propagation of a shock wave in nonlinearly elastic bars
Author(s) V. G. Yusifov (Baku)
Abstract The problem of shock wave propagation in nonlinearly elastic bars is considered. The solution of the problem of propagation of waves in gases, obtained by Riemann, does not satisfy the conservation law for mechanical energy. Later, using the thermodynamic laws, Hugoniot eliminated this inconsistency.

In the general formulation, the solution of this problem for a nonlinearly elastic bar was considered by Kh. A. Rakhmatulin. He showed that in this solution, the mechanical energy conservation law can be violated on the shock surface.

In the present study, it is shown that the representation of the shock as an intersection of characteristics with positive inclination angles is insufficient, since this does not make it possible to obtain the solution of the problem. Therefore, as was the case for gas dynamics, an additional analysis is required.
