Abstract The dispersion equation for vibrations of a magnetoelastic plate in transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields is studied theoretically and experimentally. To derive the dispersion equation, we apply the spatial approach, as well as the space-averaged approach based on the classical theory of bending. It is shown that for the transverse field, the results yielded by these approaches differ both qualitatively and quantitatively. The theoretical results are compared with experimental ones. This comparison validates the spatial approach.
