Abstract The dynamic interaction of elastic cylindrical shells with deformable media has been studied previously. For a survey of relevant publications, see [1]. One of the problems of practical importance is that of the calculation of underground pipelines under the action of a load moving along the pipe axis. The action of an axisymmetric wave of constant profile (a moving load) on an infinitely long cylindrical shell has been studied in [2]. The radial pressure on the shell is applied to its inner surface. The surrounding medium is rigidly adhered to the shell along the contact surface. Semi-analytical methods have been utilized to determine stresses and strains in the shell for large time instants. The major contribution to the displacement of the shell loaded by a moving axisymmetric load has been shown to be made by the moment-free solution.

In the present paper, we consider the response of pipelines to a moving wave load in a coupled formulation taking into account the contact interaction of the shell with a surrounding elastoplastic medium for various conditions of contact. The obtained results are compared with the analytical solution of [2], the capabilities of simplified approaches to be utilized for the solution of the problem are investigated, and the influence of a fluid inside the pipeline on the deformation process is analyzed.
