Title On the influence of deformation with aging on the shakedown phenomenon in elastic-plastic systems

Abstract The shakedown phenomenon in elastic-plastic systems subjected to aging is investigated to estimate the strength and endurance properties of various engineering structures. For the case of cyclic change of the plastic strain, their strength fails at a relatively small number of cycles (low-cycle fatigue). This fact gives rise to the problem of design of elastic-plastic systems undergoing plastic deformation only at first cycles. Such a design implies that the deformation of the system becomes elastic as the number of loading cycles increases. Such a behavior of elastic-plastic systems is possible and is accounted for by a certain distribution of negative residual stresses formed as a result of the plastic deformation at the initial stage of the loading. This phenomenon is referred to as shakedown. The present paper is aimed at the study of the shakedown phenomenon taking into account aging effects. The results of the study are illustrated by the shakedown problem for a system formed by three rods made from a metal subject to aging. Experiments with simple rod systems are considered. A dimensionless characteristic of the shakedown region is introduced.
