Abstract The influence of damage accumulation in load carrying structures on their dynamic behavior under intensive seismic excitations and properties of these structures after an earthquake is investigated. The model of elastoplastic deformation of inter-storey blocks is used which takes into account the strain and cyclic softening and stiffness degradation during unloading. The acceleration of the foundation is represented as a sample of a stationary random process with prescribed spectral density multiplied by the pseudo-envelope. Particular attention is given to the influence of the damage on the maximum absolute displacements and inter-storey shifts, and also on the parameters of the final state. It is established that the stiffness degradation under quasistatic horizontal forces and decrease in the natural frequencies of a damaged structure can be used as diagnostic parameters to assess the state of the structure after an intensive seismic excitation.
