Abstract The paper describes experimental and theoretical studies of friction of thin oxide-based coatings obtained by the carboxylation method and presents experimental results on friction loading by a scanning nanodurometer according to an original method. The results showed that, in addition to wear, there are cases of coating spallation at early stages of the tests. The analysis of the stress state arising in the coatings and substrata of various compositions and for various loading values together with the experimental results permit determining the threshold stresses for the coating material whose excess leads to spallation.
Keywords two-layer elastic half-space, friction, stress state, scanning nanodurometer
