Title Plastic instability of thin-walled cylindrical shells
Author(s) V. L. Dil'man (Chelyabinsk)
Abstract Conditions for the loss of load-carrying capacity, as well as for local instability of thin-walled cylindrical shells made from a homogeneous hardening material and subjected to the internal pressure and axial loads are obtained on the basis of the flow theory taking into account the non-proportional loading due to the variation of strained shell sizes. The corresponding critical strains are obtained as functions of the ratio of the pressure to the axial load and the shell material hardening parameters. Conditions for the longitudinal and circumferential neck formation are established depending on the same quantities.

The results obtained can be applied to studying the strength properties of thin-walled pressure vessels and other shell structures, for example, trunk pipelines. These results can be used also when preparing normative documents.
