Abstract The results of a theoretical analysis of experiments that have shown a non-monotonic strain-stress relationship in filled polymeric materials at constant strain rates are presented. The analysis was based on the nonlinear endochronous theory of aging viscoelastic materials. To approximate the experimental data we utilized the structural components of the specific work of internal forces. This led to good agreement between the theoretical and experimental values of the stress right up to the instant of fracture of the specimens. The change in the components of the specific internal energy is shown graphically, which facilitates the energy-structure analysis of the experimental data.

An increase in the strain rate is established to delay the damage process and to increase the instant at which the stresses start decreasing while the strains continue to increase. This phenomenon is accounted for by the increase of the specific absorbed energy as the strain rate decreases. The fracture condition corresponds to a certain relationship between the instantaneously reversible (elastic) specific energy and the specific absorbed energy that characterizes irreversible changes in the internal structure of the material.
