Abstract We examine the influence of micro and macro defects on the durability of viscoelastic bodies the material of which is subject to aging. Our investigation is based on the Rabotnov-Kachanov theory of damage accumulation combined with Cherepanov's theory of brittle fracture. The kinetic equations of damage accumulation are represented in the form of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. This form of equations allows us to express the damage kernel in terms of the characteristics of crack resistance of the material. Zhurkov and Kachanov-Rabotnov formulas are generalized to the case of a micro-crack affecting the long-term strength of the material. It is shown that there is no crack growth, if the stress intensity factor is less than some threshold value.
