Abstract The Pointing effect involves a change in length and outer diameter of a wire subjected to torsion. This effect is an experimentally observed manifestation of the nonlinear behavior of materials. To understand the nature of this effect, we have considered the constitutive relations for an isotropic elastic material taking into account dilatation effects and possible departure of the material properties from the special isotropy postulate (A. A. Il'yushin). A mathematical model governing the behavior of a solid cylinder subject to combined action of an axial force and a torque is constructed. The analysis of this model shows that the Pointing effect can be described by using a simple model which takes into account the geometrical nonlinearity in the material behavior.

The possibility of using solid cylinders as specimens in the tests for simultaneous tension and torsion is investigated for the case of finite strains. It is shown that the material constants occurring in the constitutive relations can be found from two experiments- for tension and torsion of a solid cylinder with fixed end surfaces.
