Title On the unsteady elastic waves in porous materials

Abstract The dynamic deformation of a porous medium has been studied in a number of papers where the stress-strain relations are equivalent to similar relations used by M. A. Biot [1]. However, the basic problem for the dynamic behavior of such a medium cannot be considered to have been finally solved and needs further study. Therefore, it is of interest to consider the propagation of unsteady elastic waves in an infinite homogeneous elastic porous medium. The presence and degree of porosity of solids are taken into account by the porosity coefficient m defined as the ratio of the volume of pores to the total volume occupied by the medium. The application of the mathematical theory of discontinuities [2, 3] to the basic relations shows that there are two longitudinal waves and one transverse wave propagating in the porous medium. Differential equations are obtained which define the variation of the intensities of the longitudinal and transverse waves during their propagation.
