Title Modeling of distributed structural damping for steady-state and transient processes
Author(s) A. P. Malyshev (Moscow)
Abstract Modern methods for the description of structural damping, in the case of the decrement of oscillations being independent of their frequency and determined mostly by their amplitude, are primarily aimed at nearly harmonic periodic processes [1-4]. These methods are mostly based on various approximations of the hysteresis curve or the direct computation of energy loss according to Coulomb-Amonton dry friction law. The latter approach was used for the investigation of transient wave processes and, as a result, many important and interesting problems were solved [5]. However, the limitations of practical application of the simplest dry friction model are quite obvious.

The method proposed in the present paper for the description of structural damping allows us to model friction loss in the case of any temporal behavior of a dynamical process, to take into account the dependence of dissipative forces on the amplitude and their arbitrary distribution over the structure.
